A ceramic base sherd from a Roman Black Burnished ware vessel dating to the period c. AD 43 - 410. The fabric is black in colour with an oxidised light grey/buff patch on the bottom of the sherd. The fabric has a coarse sandy texture and exhibits abundant well sorted quartz inclusions, frequent white micaceous inclusions occasional red iron ore and a single large sub-angular flint inclusion. The exterior vessel wall exhibits evidence of burnishing.
The sherd measures 33.15mm in height, 31.66mm in width 12.67mm maximum thickness, 4.96mm minimum thickness and weighs 20.35g.
