Tickhill III, South Yorkshire

British Museum Curatorial report by Richard Abdy

1 radiate and 55 AE nummi to AD 337 (+ 1 stray nummus) BM ref.: 2015 T956;

PAS ID SWYOR-5669FC

Circumstances of discovery

Found by Messrs [names redacted] with metal detectors, 14/11/15. The coins were scattered in an area c.10m x 5m and no other Roman finds (e.g. any remains of a pottery container) were present. A small Constantinian nummus hoard, it is unrelated in findspot to Tickhill I and II (2012 T896a&b) which are Antonine and Magnentian respectively.

Notes

The otherwise tight pattern of a Constantinian hoard just stretching into the first period of the Gloria Exercitus single standard type (AD 335-7; during Constantine the Great's lifetime) is contradicted by a nummus of AD 348-54 (fallen horseman type). The condition of the latter is much worn so this, together with its markedly outlying date suggests it is a stray intruder in the hoard group (i.e. a stray site find of coincidental findspot). The late third century barbarous radiate could well belong to the hoard though since they do survive in small numbers in other mid-Constantinian period hoards from Roman Britain.
