An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands) brooch, Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b. Plate 46, of Roman date (AD80-120). The wings are semi-cylindrical and the perforated wing / end caps are lost. The pin, axis bar, spring are also lost. A large depression is present on the reverse of the brooch; this is filled with a black coloured deposit. The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular (comma shaped) in profile. The upper edge of the head has a flat triangular wedge shaped boss - which is probably all that remains of a rearward projecting spring hook. The bow has a faceted D shaped cross section. It extends to a broken and abraded point on the lower bow; the foot and catch-plate are lost. The bow of the brooch is not decorated but any decoration present maybe lost through corrosion and abrasion. A small area on the upper bow reveals a series of parallel double incised lines which probably extended down the spine of the bow. The brooch is a mid green colour with well formed surface patina. Similar brooches can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Guide to Ancient brooches (pp 300 fig; 159) and Bayley and Butcher: Roman Brooches in Britain (pp 89-92).

The brooch measures 24.4mm length, 17.9mm width (across wings), 5.3mm width across bow, is 4.1mm thick across the bow, and weighs 4.99 grams.
