Two Post Medieval (c. 1500 to 1850) lead uniface tokens:

1. The design consists of a double-stranded cross. The reverse is undecorated. The surface is a matte light brown colour. The token measures 14.24mm long, 13.55mm wide, 2.31mm thick, weighs 2.39g. Powell Type 12.

2. The design consists of a possible flower, but the token is fragmentary so this is not certain. - possibly Powell Type 1. The reverse is undecorated. The surface is a matte light grey colour. The tokens measure 16.97mm long, 13.01mm wide, 1.92mm thick, weighs 1.84g.

Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850AD), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be Medieval, the remainder which carry stylised designs remain difficult to date but the majority are probably Post Medieval in date c.1500-1800. Powell (2012) comments that Type 1, and 12 are designs which were commonly made stock and occur in large quantities, dating to the late 16th to mid 19th centuries.

Powell, D. 2012 'The 18th century Sophistication of the Stock Design' Lead Token Telegraph Issue 86.
