A complete copper-alloy postmedieval 17th-century Irish trader's token from Enniskean in County Cork, issued in AD 1678. The obverse depicts a ship facing left with three pairs of curved lines underneath to represent waves. The obverse inscription reads HENRY.WHEDDON.MERCHANT. The reverse depicts two men at work in a blacksmith's shop. The man on the right wields an object, possbily a hammer. The reverse inscription reads IN.EINSKEAN.HIS.PENNY.1678. The token has an ornamental edge which is usual for a late Irish token.
Overall the token has a brown patina and is in a fairly worn condition. The token has a diameter of 21.9mm and is 1.7mm thick. It weighs 3.8g.
The token appears to be unique to other records of trader's tokens on the database as it has an image on both sides rather than an image on one side and initials or text on the other. An example of the token features in Williamson: Ireland BW 443, and is also illustrated in The Token Book, Galata 2010.
