MOUNT

Unique ID: WILT-C4F039

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete copper-alloy lozengiform object, probably a spacer plate from a set of linked pins. It is flat and has a circular perforation in each of the acute angles, one incomplete due to an old break. The plate is decorated with a slightly irregular circumferential groove within which is a a non-symmetrical spiral design engraved on the front face. There are two C-scrolls placed back to back, with one end of one C being abbreviated. The space in the remaining end (with the broken attachment hole) is filled with a single spiral. There is also an engraved oval close to one obtuse angle, but other areas of space remain unfilled. The reverse side is undecorated.

The object is 41.50mm in length and 17.79mm in width. It is .90mm thick. It weighs 2.22g.

There are several similar lozenge-shaped plates on the PAS database. When they have empty perforations at either end, they are often interpreted as spacer plates from linked pin sets (compare SWYOR-6CBDC4, SUR-D866BD, SF-31F506, LIN-C1B795, LIN-8FCB77 and the incomplete DENO-1202C0 and LEIC-3EBE93).

When found with rivets in the holes, they tend to be interpreted as mounts. Compare DOR-FCD100 and LVPL-CB8BFF (with neat three-spiral decoration). WILT-B11376 has neat three-spiral decoration and the remains of two or three iron rivets.

CAM-A4DEEE has the remains of a possible brooch pin secured by rivets through a perforation at one end, with gilding covering the front of both pin and plate, suggesting the possibility that at least some of these items may have been made as part of composite lozengiform brooches. They all appear to date to the 8th century AD.
