An incomplete Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, flat wing ends type, Western Group), c .f. Mackreth 2011, 5.a2.Plate 49, dated c. 80 to c. 120 AD. The wings are semi-cylindrical terminating with incomplete, perforated wing caps. The wings are decorated with a pair of grooves, obliquely angled, which together form a chevron with the bow head in between. At the junction of the wings and bow head there is a perforated lug which would have held the chord. The axis bar, spring and pin missing. The bowhead is hump-like in profile and is decorated with a vertical ridge which starts at the lug and fades out on the bow. The bow tapers to a broken edge below the mid point. The break is not too recent. The bow is sub D-shaped in section. The surface of the brooch has an incomplete light green/grey coloured patina and there are patches of active corrosion on the bow and wings. It measures 33.61mm long, 32.99mm wide across the wings and weighs 7.69g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill type. Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date toAD 80 to 120. An almost identical brooch has been recorded on the PAS from Alcester, Warwickshire; WAW-93FEC3.
