PENDANT

Unique ID: NMS-490E2A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Fragmentary gilt silver denier, of continental origin. The coin bears affinities with the profile portrait coinage of eleventh - thirteenth century France,[1] but the possibility that it originates elsewhere in Europe cannot be excluded. The obverse is a bearded portrait bust surrounded by a pelleted 'torque'; the reverse shows a cross inside a pellet border, with circumscription.

The coin has been modified by piercing, probably for use as a pendant. A hole - apparently made with respect to the border terminals on the obverse of the coin - was probably intended to accommodate a suspension loop. The coin has also been modified from its original condition by gilding.

Notes:

This coin is manufactured from precious metal and is over 300 hundred years old. It shows clear evidence of having been adapted for use as a pendant. Precious metal coins of this age that have been modified for use as jewellery are considered as objects (rather than coins) for the purposes of determining their status under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. This object should, therefore, be designated as Treasure.
