A complete copper alloy cosmetic mortar dating to the Late Iron Age to Early Roman period (100 BC to AD 200).
The mortar is an elliptical bow with a central grooved channel, low convex walls, and a U-shaped cross section. The mortar gradually tapers into a round blunted point at one end and into a circular end-loop at the other. The end-loop continues to curl round to protrude from the base of the mortar.
The metal has an uneven and dark green patina, with patches of lighter green and brown. The mortar is 58.6 mm long, 8.0 mm wide and 3.8 mm thick. It weighs 12.1 g.
Cosmetic mortars are part of a two-piece cosmetic set used for the preparation of mineral powders, most likely colourings for the eyelids and face. These artefacts tend to be found in Britain, with relatively few examples found on the continent (Jackson 2010). Other examples from Yorkshire have been recorded on the PAS database, including YORYM-7A4983.
