An incomplete copper alloy headstud brooch, dating to the Roman period (AD 75 - AD 200).
The brooch is T shaped in plan, consisting of a head and incomplete bow. The foot, catch plate and pin are all missing. The head of the brooch is comprised of rectangular wings the reverse of which acts as an integral double lug hinge mechanism through which the pin is fitted. A square sectioned bow extends centrally from the front of the wings tapering steadily in width into a worn break. The headstud is cast on and decorated with a plain cross. The bow and reverse are both undecorated.
The metal has a brownish-grey and mostly even patina. The brooch is 25.7 mm long, 17.5 mm wide, and 9.9 mm thick. It weighs 9.8 g.
Headstud brooches are a relatively common type of Roman brooch, with examples being recorded from the majority of England and Wales. Similar examples from the East Riding of Yorkshire have been recorded on the PAS database, including YORYM-A1DB24 and YORYM-0A206D.
