An incomplete Roman copper-alloy pin.

The upper half of the pin head is hemispherical and is divided into quarters by a cross formed of a wide central groove flanked by two narrower grooves. At the centre of each of these quarters is an incuse pellet. The lower half of the head is of inverted-conical form, tapering towards what remains of the circular-cross-sectioned shaft. A band of ringed grooves and ridges marks the transition between the head and the shaft.

Length: 30.3mm; width: 12mm. Weight: 7.58g.

A similar pin recorded on the PAS database is BH-76F3FD, from Braughing, Hertfordshire, which is dated to late 2nd/3rd century AD, based on comparison with a published parallel from nearby Baldock (Stead and Rigby 1986: 128/fig. 55, no. 222). As this piece differs slightly from the two parallels cited, a slightly wider date range is suggested.
