An incomplete copper alloy medieval (late 14th century) book clasp of Howsam type A.1.1, which would have consisted of a hinged, double sided plate (missing) with the loop attached cf Egan and Pritchard p154 fig 101 no 726. The loop is sub triangular , the surface slightly convex with a flat underside, and with the groove and lugs to take a hinge at one end. It has a central hole and a small lug at the other end, possibly a zoomorphic head. There is a transverse hole through this lug.
The loop is 28.09mm long and 16.41mm wide. The lug projects 10.80mm and is 6.45mm wide. The main body of the loop is 4.54mm thick and the whole weighs 6.91 g.
