~~Cast copper alloy crotal bell, circular in plan and spherical in profile with a square attachment loop at the apex of the upper half. The attachment loop is 10 mm in height, 12 mm wide and 6 mm in thickenss, and is perforated with a circular aperture, partially filled by iron deposit from the attachment. Both the upper half of the bell and the lower half is decorated with the 'fish-scale' pattern with overlapping moulded semicircles. There is a central raised rib which divides the upper and lower halves of the bell. On the upper half of the bell, there are two circular sound holes 3 mm in diameter, one of these has been filled with iron deposit. On the lower half of the bell, there are two large circular holes, 9 mm in diameter, connected by a slit which has been partially mis-cast but runs perpendicular to the central rib, along the circumference of the bell until it almost meets the rib on both sides. The corroded iron pea or ball clapper survives within the bell. Diameter 34.5mm, weight 58g.
Bailey (1992) has a similar crotal bell with fish-scale decoration on page 40, no.7, which he dates from the early 16th to early 17th century.
