A cast copper alloy Roman brooch of headstud type, dating from AD 75 - 200. The bow is square in section and is plain. The stud is teardrop shaped, the point of the teardrop pointing towards the foot of the brooch. The upper part of the teardrop is decorated with an annular groove which contains faint traces of enamel, though the colour is not now discernible. There is a ridge along the centre of the bow above the stud; a pseudo forward hook. There is a circular foot, decorated with two narrow, concentric grooves on the edge. The part between the grooves is decorated with incised oblique lines. At the head are two rectangular wings, tubular on the reverse, separated by the slot for the hinged pin. Each wing is decorated with four narrow, vertical grooves; the central band of metal left raised is plain while the other two have incised transverse lines. There is no head loop. The catch plate, the copper alloy axis bar and the half of the copper alloy pin remain in place. The brooch is 41.1mm long, 19.5mm wide and 18.9mm thick. 8.9g. The brooch has a grey green patina and is slightly damaged across the lower bow.

Ssimilar brooches are illustrated in Hattat, 2000, Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, figure 192. Compare also Mackreth, 2011, Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, volume 2, plate 74.
