A uniform button of the Petworth Volunteers dating from the period 1797-1803. The inscription PETWORTH . VOLUNTEERS ., starts at about 7 o'clock and fills all of a border enclosed by lines around a central crown in low relief. The reverse has a maker's name around a separately applied circular loop. It reads WILLIAM WILLIAMS and is also towards the circumference travelling around the reverse in low relief.
It measures 20mm in diameter, 1mm in thickness and weighs 2g.
The Petworth Volunteers were raised in June 1797 as a one Company unit under the command of Captain Wilfred Mitford; they are not re-raised in 1803. Also see SUR-83EB63 on this database.
