A copper alloy nail probably of post-medieval date. The object has a rectangular sectioned shank and a wedge shaped point. The head is sub-rectangular and flat.
Copper alloy nails were often used for similar purposes as rivets. Nails are difficult to date and in this case the condition of the nail indicates it was probably manufactured between c1700 and c1900 AD, but it could be a very well preserved Roman nail. Similar nails were commonly used to fix planking or decking on wooden ships and was used over a fairly long time span from the medieval to post-medieval. The good level of preservation would suggest a later date in the range.
