Copper alloy strap end. Cast openwork tongue shaped strap end, Thomas Class E Type 1, of 'Winchester style'. The object is split at the belt end, with one leaf lost. A ridge separates this attachment from an openwork panel with eight apertures, which is considered a typical degeneration from more coherent schemes of inhabited plant scroll. A series of rhomboid figures are discernible along the centre line. The metal now has a reddish tint typical of Anglo-Scandinavian metalwork. The style was popular as far north as York. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000.
