A copper alloy hinged book clasp of Howsam type A.1.3, dating to the period AD 1350 to 1450.

The object has a flat sub-circular plate with a circular hole through the middle. The plate is not decorated on either side. At one end is a damaged recessed bar which would have been attached to a strap fixed to one cover of the book. At the other side of the is a zoomorphic terminal.

Similar examples are listed in Egan and Pritchard (1991: 154-5) from excavated contexts which date them to the period AD 1350 to 1450.

Notes:

This item was originally recorded as a strap-end and so any piercing through the terminal was not noted.
