BUCKLE

Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of post-medieval date (1550-1650). The buckle frame is broken being damaged across one loop. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is lost but would have been attached to the central bar by the terminal being folded back upon itself. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. The frame of the buckle is decorated with a projecting lobe and a series of cast recessed lines positioned either side of the central bar. At the mid point of the loop on both edges are relatively crude projections again decorated with radiating lines - possible a shell motif. The majority of the decoration is lost due to abrasion and corrosion. The buckle is a mid brown colour with an abraded patina; movement in the ploughsoil has resulted in the buckle becoming asymmetrical, and slightly bowed in profile. Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800' pages 65-67 (specifically no 401 or 405). He dates these to the early post medieval (Tudor and Stuart) period (1550-1650).

The buckle measures 34.9mm long, 21.7mm wide, is 2.4mm thick and weighs 2.48 grams.
