A complete lead bell of medieval date. The bell is sub-spherical with four integrally cast petal-like expansions from the base and a loop at the apex. The surface is decorated with a raised design which represents the midrib and veins of a leaf. The pea remains within the bell.
The metal is a light brownish-white colour and is worn. The bell 21.3mm long, 14.6mm wide, 11.4mm thick and weighs 6.2g.
Similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database. For examples see: YORYM-747851 and SWYOR-F92A53. Four examples from London (Egan and Pritchard 1991, nos. 1668-71) were all made from tin, and found in contexts of ceramic phase 7 (c. 1200-c. 1230) and 9 (c. 1270-c. 1350).
