Silver gros tournois of Loius IX of France, issued 1266-70, gilded on the obverse and with the remains of clasp fittings attached to the reverse. This transforming of a coin to a brooch (or clasp) was a common phenomenon in the late 13th century and a number of similar examples are known including several from Norfolk (Marsden 2014, 90-2). The adaption also means that the coin is treated as an object and, being a precious metal artefact of more than 300 years age, is thus a case of Treasure. Diameter 26mm. Weight 4.38g. Late 13th century.
