A silver vervel of 'washer' type, inscribed on one side in italics *Edw.Lord.Mountague

Vervels were small rings used in falconry, and were fixed to the birds jesses, the leather thongs that were attached to the bird's ankles. Conteporary treatises on the sport indicate that vervels sometimes served a functional purpose as a point of attachment for the leash. They also normally carry the name of the owner of the animal and sometimes his or her place of residence.

The form of this vervel and the style of lettering indicate that is propbably of 17th Century date. The inscription therefore is likely a reference to Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton (1563 - 1644), or his son, the 2nd Baron (1616 - 1684). The Montagu family home at Boughton House, between Weekley and Geddington in Northamptonshire, is less than 20km from the findspot.
