An incomplete copper alloy lugged disc brooch of the Roman period, dating from c. AD 100 - c. AD 200.
The inlaid decoration, the pin, hinge and catch plate are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.
The brooch is formed from a broadly oval plate with eight projecting peripheral lugs or knops. The plate consists of eight integrally cast circular cells surrounding a larger central oval cell. These probably would have held glass beads, semi precious stones or enamel decoration. Each oval has been surrounded by a border of pellets with a semi circular knop at the top of each one on the outside edge. The reverse has two evenly spaced broadly square lugs at either end of the brooch, these are probably the remains of the hinge and catch plate.
The brooch measures 21.5 mm in length and is 19.4 mm wide. It has a thickness of 2.1 mm and weighs 1.4 g.
The brooch is a dark green and has an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. Other broadly similar examples of this type of artefact have been recorded on the database including PUBLIC-4E9DC0, WMID-545A55 and NMS-2F16D3. These are similar in style and have been given a broad date of the 2nd to 4th century.
