An incomplete Medieval-Post Medieval copper alloy chaffing dish handle, dating AD 1400-1600. The object is in two parts, the drop handle and the lug. The lug is in the form of a hand, which is grasping the handle. The hand is formed from a sub-rectagular end with rounded edges. An oval hole has been cast to run through the centre, forming the inside of the hand, and lines have been engraved onto the top to form fingers. There is a short square cuff below and then a rounded projection at the base, which would have fitted into the rim of the vessel. The handle is flat, with a straight arm running through the lug and a steeply curved arm that would have formed the grip. There are punched annulets along the upper surface of the handle. The object has a mid-dark grey patina, with patches of pale green where the metal has been exposed beneath.

A similar example can be found on the PAS database (SUSS-BE1094) with the lugs often found on their own, cf. DENO-AFCF5D. It is believed these would have been attached to chaffing dishes. chaffing dishes were used to keep food warm at a table and were often elaborately decorated. Anthropomorphic cast decorations are often found on chaffing dishes, making it likely that these hand lugs are from such a vessel.
