Post Medieval copper alloy pocket sundial consisting of a broad, flat, copper alloy ring with an open channel cut in the centre and extending around approx half of the ring. The inside of the other half of the ring, corresponding to the aperture is divided by four incised lines, the outer two creating a border and the inner two creating three linear sections. These are crossed at regular intervals by short diagonal lines. These are marked with two rows of numbers, facing opposite ways for reading. The surface of the outer ring is inscribed, either side of the aperture with the months, six on each side I F M A M I and I A S O N D aligned 'upside down' for ease of reading. At the end of each set of inscriptions, insribed across the band are the initials SHW, which may be a marker mark?
Given the use of the letter I for June etc, the date of this object is probably 17th century.
