Fragment of a cast gilt copper alloy double-loop, sub-oval spectacle buckle with trefoil sides, with only one of the trefoil sides remaining attached to the strap bar. The rest of the frame is missing and would have had rounded ends. The strap bar is narrowed and recessed from the edge of the frame but has the appearance of being extended by the decoration of two parallel incised transverse lines across the surface of the frame. The frame is decorated with a punched crescent on either side of these lines, and a row of punched annulets below, following the curve of the moulded bifid sides.
Whitehead (1996) illusrates a similar buckle with trefoil sides and another with punched annulets on pages 70-71, nos.441 & 445, which are dated from c.1600-1720.
