A lead alloy cloth seal of Rotterdam in The Netherlands, probably dating from the 16th century. The front of the disc has a worn shield. The shield contains the coat of arms of the city, a shield bearing: a pale; on a chief quarterly, four lions passant (arms of Rotterdam: Vert a pale Argent; on a chief Or quarterly four lions passant 1 & 4 Sable 2 & 3 Gules). There are groups of three pellets above, below, and to the sides of the shield ( top and right remaining). Around the shield, outside of a pelleted circle is the inscription RO[TTERDAM]. The reverse of the disc is damaged, but a letter, perhaps P, is seen in the centre. This is enclosed within a circular border. A 'sun' initial mark is also located at 12 o'clock above the border. This motif comprises a central pellet with five smaller ones surrounding it. A larger pellet is located to the right, and an inscription follows, reading SI[ ]. The connecting stub of lead is still intact.
