The stone from which the axe is made is an iron rich medium/fine sandstone which occurs naturally on the Isle of Wight. It is probably an ironstone as most of the grains are coated with iron oxide. The stone type has been identified by staff at Dinosuar Isle Museum, Sandown, Isle of Wight.
