An incomplete Early Medieval copper alloy harness fitting dating to the period c. AD 1000-1100. The fitting is sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross-section. There is a central trapezoidal aperture so that the object forms a loop. The inner edge is wider and has a recent break on its side where a projecting arm would have attached the loop to the body of the cheek piece. The fitting is very worn and there is a green patina on the surface.
Square or trapezoidal loops of this type are believed to be characteristic of harness cheek pieces which date to the 11th century (Williams, 2007, p4, fig. 4).
The harness fitting measures 16.58mm in length, 16.49mm in width, 5.45mm in thickness and weighs 4.55g.
