Post Medieval (16th century) strap fitting; hook. The copper alloy hook has an inverted, elongated trapezoidal body with a rounded 'W' shaped upper edge and similar shaped lower side edges. The outer face of the body has a vertical, central, groove between circular rivet holes. The rivet holes have the remains of iron rivets. Protruding, and integral, to the lower edge of the body is a sub-rectangular sectioned hook which forms a slight curve in profile before it is broken and the complete hook is missing. In profile the reverse of the body and hook of the fitting forms a concave face. The surface of the fitting has an abraded dark green patina. The strap fitting measures 45.53mm long and 16.7mm wide. It weighs 3.71g.
Margeson (1993) illustrates similar examples, Nos. 257 and 258, and dates these to the late 16th to early 17th centuries. Margeson (ibid) comments these may be related to sword belts. This is echoed by Read (2008) who illustrates an almost identical example, No. 782 which is dated to the 16th century.
