An incomplete medieval copper alloy finger ring, dating to 1150 - 1450. The ring is 'stirrup-shaped', having a hoop which extends smoothly into a tall bezel, which has a sub-rectangular setting for two missing imitation glass or gemstones. The hoop is oval in cross-section but is broken with less than half of the ring remaining: one arm extends c.12mm from the top of the bezel, the other c.17mm. The metal has a smooth dark-green patina. The incomplete ring now measures 22.5mm in length and 15.2mm in height. The ring is 5.5mm wide and 5.4mm thick at the bezel, and 3.5mm wide and 1.9mm thick at the breaks. It weighs 3.07g.
Notes:
Similar examples of 'stirrup-shaped' rings are published in Egan and Pritchard (1991), fig. 215, in particular nos. 1608-9. The authors write that although this form of finger ring became popular in England from the middle of the 12th century and continued in use for at least three hundred years, it may not have remained fashionable after the first half of the 13th century (1991: 326-7).
