Description: A complete silver post-medieval hooked dress fastener. It is circular in shape with twisted silver wire filigree decoration on the outer face. This consists of a double wire border with four ovals arranged in a quatrefoil in the middle with a raised pellet in their centre. To the reverse is a hook with two attachment eyes at one end, all formed from a single piece of wire. It survives in good condition although the hook is slightly bent out of shape.
Dimensions: Length: 13.96mm, width: 9.19mm, thickness: 3.31mm, weight: 0.83g
Discussion: This fastener belongs to Read's (2008, 159-160) early post-medieval Class B, Type 2, which he assigned to the 16th and 17th century. This is a small group of which little is still known. This example is particularly similar to his no.598 (2007 T613, LVPL-033E25, although he labels it T379) and no.599 (treasure case 2006 T584, BH-0174E0).
The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
