A medieval (1270-1350) copper-alloy rectangular buckle frame with convex sides and a narrowed outer edge circular in cross-section (2.7mm diameter) to accommodate a folding sheet or roller (now missing). The frame's bar is narrowed and offset, with a central external notch to retain the pin (also missing). It measures 14.9x14.3mm (internal measurement 8.7x10.9mm), is max.4.1mm thick and weighs 1.61g.
Notes:
Ottaway and Rogers (2002) illustrates a similar buckle, Figure 1469; No. 14319 which was found in an early 14th century context. Egan and Pritichard (2002) illustrate a similar buckle, No. 440, although made of iron, dates to the late 13th to mid 14th century.
