Cast copper alloy single-loop oval buckle frame with an ornate outer edge and a narrowed and off-set pin bar to which a sheet copper alloy plate is attached by two extensions that loop around the bar. The pin is missing that would have been looped around the bar between these two plate extensions. The ornate outer edge of the frame is made up of two squares and two triangles defined by transverse and oblique grooves, but no obvious notch for the pin, though much of the original surface has corroded away. The plate is made up of a folded piece of copper alloy sheet and has two broken rivet holes at the opposite end to the frame, with one rivet still intact. The plate is quite corroded and pitted but appears to have a border of small triangles around its edge and an oval wavy border around the rivet holes.
The buckle frame is 20 mm long and 14 mm wide and 2.4 mm in thickness. The plate is 35 mm long, 11 mm wide and 0.7 mm thick.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates similar single-loop oval buckle frames with ornate outer edges and decorated plates on pages 22-23, nos.98 & 100, which are dated from c.1250-1400.
Egan (2002) illustrates examples of ornate oval frames and separate plates on page 77, fig.46, nos.314 & 319, which are dated from c.1270-1350.
