Incomplete and rather worn Roman copper alloy circular plate brooch, gilt on the front face and tin-coated on the reverse. Mackreth 2011, British Plate 3.b3. A central cell has lost its glass "gem". There appears to be a plain ring around the cell, though any stamped impressions may have been obliterated. This in turn is surrounded by a peripheral ring of punched impressions that appear to be simple rectangles set radially (ibid. fig. 2.16). On the reverse there is a single pin lug with an incomplete catchplate. Diameter 37.1mm. Mid 2nd - mid 3rd century.
