UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: WILT-3ED81B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A fragment of copper alloy unidentified object probably dating to the medieval or post-medieval periods, AD c1350-c1700. The fragment comprises a short section which is sub-square in profile at both ends, with one end smaller than the other. Both ends have evidence that they are incomplete. At the larger profile end, there is a worn groove that slopes out to a wider section. This section curves round and has evidence of transverse cut lines, which may be decorative but their lack of geometry suggests they are wear marks. On the outer side of the curve just beyond the transverse cut lines, there is a raised rib before the object narrows. Along the outer edge of the curved object there is a wide groove which terminates at the worn sloping groove. There is also some evidence of a groove across the smaller end of the object. This object may be a fragment from an annular or penannular brooch or buckle, alternatively it may be part of a knife end stop or a purse bar.
