The hoop is of flattened D cross-section, within plain raised single band borders. The outer surface has a wide plain wavy band separating beaded panels, between the moulded edges of the hoop. The internal hoop diameter can be estimated at about 20mm; band width 7.9mm; band thickness 2.1mm; weight 3.42g. The ring, which has an unevenly tarnished/corroded surface, has not undergone any cleaning or conservation.
The form of the ring indicate that it dates to the fifteenth or early sixteenth century. A similar example with zig-zag rather than wavy banding was onboard the Mary Rose when lost in 1545 (81A2533; Redknap 2005, fig. 3.9). A silver ring with same design, though with rubies set in the diagonal bands, was found at York Minster in 1829 (also attributed to the sixteenth century; Dalton 1912, no. 1884). Similar beading is found on a silver ring from Llanover, Monmouthshire (04.12), dated to the early sixteenth century. A silver gilt ring with a single zig-zag groove juxtaposed by small decorative punches from Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, was dated to the early sixteenth century (TAR 2005/6, no. 435).2015-09-22 17:54:322019-04-02 12:49:42312015-06-0723Certain11312936PAS560187C800165A22121NMGWSilver11728GildedIncompleteFairMEDIEVALMDx14221p0gjgrsxwzxPOST MEDIEVALPMx41047p0gjgrs6sgxMetal detectorCircaCirca7429582549190052549141424SO2256SO2256SO25NW52.19669452-3.1426005126347624101533780DH007026_01.jpg997110Medieval gilt ringNational Museum Wales 4images/wenkedomscheit/WalesCultivated landEuropean RegionUnitary AuthorityPowysUnitary AuthorityPowysCommunity52.1686-3.1608GladestrySubmitted for consideration as Treasure96691
