A silver early-medieval sceat of Series E (plumed bird variety J), dating c.695/700-720; probably minted in the southern Netherlands, possibly in Domburg. Ref: Metcalf 1993: 196-212.

Notes:

This coin has an obverse die-link with two other known examples, both from Norfolk- one from the site at Bawsey (Metcalf 1993, cat. no. 191), the other only listed as 'Norfolk' (EMC 1999.0016).

Obverse description: Plumed bird with clawed feet facing right, with two pellets enclosed by body and long, curving beak. Between the tail and back foot the top of a cross pommee is visible (although not entirely on the flan). Two other pellets in front of head and another in front of bottom of the beak (possible forming the end of a cross arm, cross off flan).

Reverse description: A pellet standard enclosing four lines and a central annulet around a pellet. group of three pellets either side. Some motifs outside standard although these are mostly off the flan and cannot be identified more closely.
