Copper alloy buckle. Cast single looped or D shaped buckle with a markedly expanded and canted outer edge and a narrowed and offset strap bar with a knop at either end. The outer edge of the frame bears incised curvilinear motifs. The buckle is clasped by a slotted sub-rectangular plate of thickness 1.5mm, narrower and thinner (0.7mm) behind where it is slightly expanded at its end, and with the framed heraldic image of a lion regardant on its display face. The beast appears on a stippled ground and the two corners of the field towards the strap are each occupied by a domed rivet of head diameter 2.6mm, length 6mm and shank diameter 1.5mm. Both plate and buckle bear extensive traces of gilding. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1300.
