A post medieval lead alloy thumbpiece from a tin-glazed earthernware vessel dating from the 17th century. This thumbpiece is fitted onto the handle of a tin-glazed earthernware vessel, a fragment of the handle survives - it has a cream fabric and white glaze. The thumbpiece is a flat plume very similar to one on a baluster measure recovered from the Mary Rose (Hornsby, Weinstein Homer 1989:87), however the pottery suggests a later 17th century date. This object comprises a circular band that fits around the ceramic handle of the vessel and there is a triangular shaped lead alloy terminal the projects along the handle, this is a right angles to the circular band. The hinge projects from the circular band at the same point as the triangular terminal but the hinge is follows the same line as the band. The plume-shaped thumbpiece and another section, presumably part of the lid projects from the hinge.
Dimensions: length: 55.22mm; width of hinge: 12.79mm; diameter of circular band: 19.66mm; weight: 30.55g.
