FINGER RING

Unique ID: WMID-82BDCD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A complete gold finger ring, of Late Roman dating (Later 2nd to 3rd Centuries AD).

The bezel is sub oval, with no trace of an intaglio setting. The shoulders of the ring are triangular or shield shaped, with a horizontal groove underneath, separating the shoulder from the hoop. The hoop has a rectangular cross section. The internal surface is plain.

It measures 14.2 mm in length, 20.4 mm wide and 7.6 mm thick. The hoop is 1.9 mm thick. The bezel measures 13.1 mm in length and 7.6 mm wide. The internal diameter measures 15.1 mm. It weighs 2.7 g.

The finger ring is a mid yellow colour, with an even surface patina.

This finger ring is similar in style to that of an Guiraud type 3a,a finger ring with decorated triangular shoulders. These are consistent with a Late 2nd to Early 3rd Century AD dating. As it has a precious metal content of greater than 10%, and is older than 300 years, it should be considered as potential Treasure under the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.
