Five complete, lead or lead alloy shot of the Post Medieval to Modern period, probably dating from c. AD 1650 - c. AD 1900.

The balls are spherical. Number 1 has a pronounced band around the middle of the ball, the others have visible casting seams. Numbers 2 and 3 have a flattened base, and number 3 has a concave depression on the surface. They all exhibit post depositional damage, in the form of minor scratches, pitting and denting on the surface. Some possible evidence of firing, in the form of vertical indentations, are present on numbers 2 and 3.

Measurements: (Image, 1 = Top left, 5 = bottom right)

1. Diameter: 13.0 mm, (min Diameter: 11.7 mm), Weight: 10.0 g
2. Diameter: 14.4 mm, Weight: 15.1 g
3. Diameter: 13.1 mm, Weight: 10.2 g
4. Diameter: 10.3 mm, Weight: 6.1 g
5. Diameter: 12.3 mm, Weight: 8.9 g

Average measurement Numbers 1-3, Diameter: 13.5 mm, Weight: 11.8 g (0.42 oz)
Average measurement Numbers 4-5, Diameter: 11.3 mm, Weight: 7.5 g (0.26 oz)

The balls are a mid to dark grey in colour with an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.

The first ball is possibly a "belted" shot similar to the type used in a Brunswick rifle, introduced in 1836. It consists of a main spherical body with an integrally cast thickened band around the circumference. However, at 13.0mm, this example is too small for a rifle bullet (17.9mm) and may have been used in a smaller calliber rifled firearm. The others, with a prominent casting seam, probably date to the period c. AD 1650 - c. AD 1800. The average weight of the balls (except 1) suggest that they were intended to be fired from a pistol. Other examples of these types of shot have been recorded on the database, including DENO-E865E0 and NLM-B19D6D.
