An incomplete silver voided short cross penny. Possibly John (c.1199-1216) or Henry III (c.1216-1272), class 6 (c.1210-1217) due to the style of the bust/beard.The coin has been broken (though not a clean break) in antiquity diagonally across the bust from the 10 o'clock to the 5 o'clock position. There is evidence of the coin being holed along the break at the 10 o'clock position and 3.78mm in from the edge, the hole is 1.33mm wide and 1.74mm in length and is straight sided. The hole appears to have been made from the reverse side as the edge of the hole curls over slightly on the obverse of the coin. The coin is worn on the obverse and possibly struck off center. Only one complete limb of the reverse cross is visible as is one quatrefoil of pellets in the angle. reverse and only partial letters of the legends remain.

Obverse - [hENRICVS REX], reverse - [...]F.ON.L[...]. London mint and moneyer uncertain (probably LEDVLF or RAV(L)F).

Length - 16.14mm. Width - 9.85mm. Thickness - 0.64. Weight - 0.47g.

North Vol 1, 1963, page 165 number 974-977.
