A First World War medal (British War Medal) awarded to a member of the VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment). The medal has suffered from some edge damage which appears to have been purposely inflicted.
Laurence Spring reports:
Lorna Marjorie Cambrier Faunce
She was born on 6 February 1889 at Dalhousie, Bengal, India. Her parents were Charles Edward and Winifred Mary Faunce.
The 1901 census records her as being a pupil at a private school for girls at Corstorphine, Connaught Road, Weymouth, along with her older sister Gladys, who was also born in India. Neither Lorna or Gladys are mentioned in the 1911 census.
She must have joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment sometime in late 1914 or early 1915 and seems to have served abroad twice during the war. See the following links,
Her medal index card is not on Ancestry for some reason, but she appears to have received the 1915 Star, and the British and Victory Medals. The one that was found in South Warnborough is her British War Medal. Accoridng to the Long, Long Trail website, http://www.1914-1918.net/soldiers/themedals.html these medals were silver and the Victory Medals bronze.
What her subsequent movements are unknown, but she died unmarried in the Easthampstead Registration District of Berkshire during the December quarter of 1969.
