CANNON BALL

Unique ID: DENO-D6BF2B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete iron cast iron cannon ball of the Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1500 - c. AD 1700.

The ball is spherical. Iron corrosion covers most of the surface of the object and appears to be stable. No casting seam is visible. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition. However, there are a number of areas which exhibit pitting, denting, and grazes, including a broadly circular depression at the base and a broadly circular depression and broadly oval perforation on the left side of the ball. This damage is as a direct result of the exposing of casting flaws by corrosion which has forced areas of metal away from the surface. It is highly unlikely that the ball has been fired / used.

The ball measures 89.5 mm in diametre and weighs 2700 g (2.7 kg, 95.2 oz or 5.95 lb).

The ball is a red brown to dark brown in colour and has an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the surface detail. The size of the ball suggests that it was for a Saker artillery piece (3.5" bore and 5.25 - 7.5 lb ball). Other examples of cannon balls of this size (approximately) have been recorded on the database, including YORYM-A088E7 and SUR-2D3E56.
