CANNON BALL

An incomplete iron cast iron cannon ball of the Late Medieval to Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1475 - c. AD 1700.

The ball is roughly spherical but has flattened slightly on one side. Iron corrosion covers most of the surface of the object and appears to be stable. There are eight, small, broadly circular perforations present at the base of the object, as well as a larger broadly oval perforation off centre. There are three broadly circular depressions present also. These could be a result of a casting flaw or a result of corrosion. From the large oval perforation, it appears as though at least half of the cannon ball is hollow. This could be a result of a casting flaw or corrosion. No casting seam is visible.

The ball measures 61.8 mm in diameter (however the precise diameter is unknown due to corrosion). It has a height of 61.3 mm and weighs 800.4 g (28.23 oz and 1.76 lb).

The ball is a red brown to dark brown in colour and has an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the surface detail. The size of the ball suggests it was possibly for a Falcon cannon (2.5 inch bore, and 2lb ball), although due to corrosion it is difficult to be sure of the original size. Other examples of cannon balls of this size (approximately) have been recorded on the database, including SWYOR-5D91DC.
