CANNON BALL

A complete iron cast iron cannon ball of the Late Medieval to Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1475 - c. AD 1700.

The ball is spherical. Iron corrosion is present on the surface of the object and appears to be stable. There is a casting seam that runs the circumference of the ball about half way down. There is a broadly circular depression at the base of the ball and a broadly triangular depression on the left side on the seam.

The ball measures 66.4 mm in diameter and weighs 1073.8 g (1.74 kg, 37.87 oz and 2.3670 lb).

The ball is a red brown to dark brown in colour and has an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the surface detail. The size of the ball suggests it was possibly for a Falcon cannon (2.5 inch bore, 2lb ball). Other examples of cannon balls of this size have been recorded on the database, including SWYOR-0D82C1 and SWYOR-E227E4.

Evidence of reuse: Used by previous owners to prop up flower pot
