DRESS HOOK

An incomplete composite copper alloy hooked tag (dress hook), of Early Post Medieval dating (16th Centuries AD).

Around 50% of the dress hook is present, consisting of the die-stamped front plate. The wire hook and loop are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The plate comprises a trefoil of hollow domed bosses. Each boss has six stamped pellets. At the centre of the bosses, is a circular sectioned copper alloy rivet, which would have secured a further sheet metal rove. The front plate has an engrailed edge to match the central rove. The reverse is concave and undecorated.

It measures 20.1 mm in length, 19.9 mm wide and 5.0 mm thick. It weighs 3.0 grams.

The hooked tag is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina.

The hooked tag is of the type classified by Read (2008, 78) as an Early Post Medieval Class D, type 6, a single sharp-hooked clasp. These type are typically distinguished by a transverse laterally projecting attachment loop on the reverse. Class D come in a variety of different front shapes, with Type 6 being trefoil like this example. Read considers all of Class D hooked tags to be of 16th Century dating (2008, 59).
