This silver personal seal is a characteristic early to mid-17th century type, with two initials, R and L, flanking a knot out of which issues a floral spray. This could be the seal of a single owner, but it may also represent the initials of a husband and wife. Similar motifs are commonly found on signet rings and we have number of such rings in the British Museum. This find would make a significant acquisition for the local museum.

As this item was found in 1995 prior to the implementation of the Treasure Act 1996 it will need to be judged under the common law of treasure trove. Under treasure trove evidence would have to point to the object having been deliberately hidden with the intention of recovery. This fragment is most likely to be a casual loss and therefore does not constitute treasure trove.

This Treasure Case was reported prior to 2007 at which time PAS database records for items of potential Treasure became mandatory. As such some information may be missing from the record and no image of the object could be located.

The details of this find are now being added as part of a retrospective documentation project by the FLO in order to ensure maximum retention and accessibility of knowledge.

This object is does not feature in the Treasure Annual Report 2002.
