Medieval York Glazed Ware (1175-1250) handle sherd, most likely from a large decorated jug which is the typical form of this ware (Jennings 1992, 19). The fabric is hard fired with a rough uneven break. The fabric is grey white with moderate poorly sorted sub-angular quartz inclusions. The sherd has a high gloss yellow-green suspension glaze, with incised wavy lines either side and parallel to a central pellet longitudinal decoration. The decoration is dark green, achieved through the inclusion of copper (Brooks 1987, 151). Examples of York Glazed Ware and this decoration can be seen in Mainman and Jenner (2013) page 1204 fig. 466 no. 4207, and page 1206 fig. 469. The sherd has a length/diameter of 17.38mm, a width of 30.08mm, and weighs 24.01g.

The Yorkshire Museum has a significant representative collection of York Glazed Ware (Jennings 1992), some of which can be seen on the online database: jug, seal jug.

Initial sherd identification by Adam Parker: Assistant Curator of Archaeology, Yorkshire Museum.
